The very beginning was in the distant 1953 when the first metallurgical factory in Bulgaria started working. A group of young enthusiasts, united after their love towards Bulgarian folklore song and dances, decided to create their own ensemble, in which they could do these activities. That was the start. Just like every new beginning, it was combined with lots of difficulties-the not-yet built factory, the poor material equipment. In spite of this nothing had the power to stop the great enthusiasm of the amateurs. Then the first prize came-first place of the district festival of amateur art activities in ‘Tsarkva’ Village in 1954. It was the success their hard work had deserved. In 1968 in the city of Sofia the Ninth Worlds Youth Festival was carried out and the only ensemble, invited to present the traditional folklore of the Sofia district was the folklore ensemble of the DMZ ‘Lenin’. This gave self-confidence and stimulus for good work. The expected results came soon: Seven republican festivals-six golden and one silver medal, participation in more than 20 international festivals. The folklore ensemble ‘Graovo’ had won the ‘Kiril and Metodii’ order second degree. This all happened in 50 years filled with hard work, a lot of love and energy. The first choreographer and also one of the initiators for forming of the dancing ensemble was Trifon Tinkov. He was born in 1934 in Stara Zagora and he started working in the ‘Lenin’ factory in 1953. Since then to 1980 he was closely bind to the creative growth and great successes of the ensemble. Nowadays, 10 years past his death, the dances he had created with a lot of love are still performed.
As choreographers with the ensemble Vasil Nedov and Vasil Radev had worked. Since 1984 to nowadays the choreographer of the ensemble is Alexander Netzov. Despite the problems it had, folklore ensemble ‘Graovo’ continues teaching young people to love of their country and enjoying the audience with its performances. In the four schools about 200 children are training. The folk choir of ensemble ‘Graovo’, which gave to the Bulgarian culture a lot of talented singers, was successfully guided by the choir-master Ivan Tonchev. He had lived about 50 years with the problems of the ensemble not only as its choir-master, but also as its main artistic leader. After his retire, leaders of the choir were Tatqna Toncheva, Verka Momchilova and Emiliq Boqnova. What would an ensemble be without folk orchestra- those people, who are on the stage since the rising of the curtain until its letting down. At first it was created of amateur musicians but later it became a well balanced orchestra of professional musicians. Without their participation the successes achieved through the years would be impossible. So far famous orchestra conductors such as Nikola Atanasov, Tsvetan Popov, Atanas Vulchev and Tanq Toncheva had worked with the orchestra. Nowadays its leader is Dimitar MItov.
